Henrietta Lacks' cancer cells changed medical history. They were harvested without her knowledge back in 1951. Her cells were used to develop polio vaccines and also aided scientists in AIDS, cancer, gene mapping and various other researches.
Henrietta nor her family were never compensated for her contribution.
